Frequently Asked Questions - South African Labor Law & BCEA Overtime

Under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), overtime rates are:

  • 1.5x rate: Work exceeding normal hours on weekdays and Saturdays
  • 2x rate: Work on Sundays and public holidays

This calculator automatically applies these rates based on your business hours and the day of the week.

All official South African public holidays for 2025 are pre-configured:

  • New Year's Day (1 Jan)
  • Human Rights Day (21 Mar)
  • Good Friday (18 Apr)
  • Family Day (21 Apr)
  • Freedom Day (27 Apr)
  • Workers' Day (1 May)
  • Youth Day (16 Jun)
  • Women's Day (9 Aug)
  • Heritage Day (24 Sep)
  • Day of Reconciliation (16 Dec)
  • Christmas Day (25 Dec)
  • Day of Goodwill (26 Dec)

Work on these days automatically calculates at 2x (double time) rate.

In the Employee & Settings section:

  1. Set your Work Start Time (e.g., 08:00)
  2. Set your Work End Time (e.g., 17:00)
  3. Click "Save & Apply to Grid"

The calculator will automatically:

  • Calculate your daily business hours
  • Populate weekdays with these hours
  • Apply overtime rates for hours exceeding your business hours

Yes! This calculator supports decimal hours:

  • 7.5 hours = 7 hours 30 minutes
  • 8.25 hours = 8 hours 15 minutes
  • 4.75 hours = 4 hours 45 minutes

Simply enter the decimal value in the "Hours Worked" column. The calculator accepts increments of 0.5 hours.

Important: This calculator provides estimates based on general BCEA guidelines.

For official payroll purposes, you should:

  • Verify calculations with qualified HR professionals
  • Check against current BCEA regulations
  • Consider your specific employment contracts
  • Consult labour law practitioners for complex situations

Always double-check results before using for official payroll or legal purposes.

To generate a professional timesheet report:

  1. Fill in your First Name, Last Name, and Hourly Rate
  2. Enter hours worked for each day in the grid
  3. Click "Generate Report"
  4. The report page opens with a professional summary
  5. Use your browser's print function (Ctrl+P) to print or save as PDF

Reports include detailed breakdowns of regular hours, overtime, and total pay calculations.
